Smudges are frequently led by an elder or spiritual leader, such as a shaman, though average citizens can perform their own smudging ceremonies when they feel the urge, and especially during times of prayer. Can remove of bad entities or attachments and not linger on you which sacred herbs and medicines are burned as part of a ritual, or for cleansing or health purposes. The practice generally involves prayer and the burning of sacred medicines, such as sweetgrass, cedar, sage and tobacco. While colonization has repressed such traditions, the practice of smudging has survived to the present day. Smudging is a ritual practiced by various cultures. It involves burning plant resins and herbs to clear away negative energy, invite peace and harmony, and set positive intentions. Purpose of Smudging: ***Clearing Energy: Smudging is used to cleanse spaces or individuals of negative energies, anxieties, sadness, and impurities. ***Positive Intentions: It creates an opening for prayers and positive intentions to be heard. ***Spiritual Connection: The smoke rises as prayers to the earth, sky, sun, moon, plants, animals, and water. ***Sacred Plants Used for Smudging: -Sage: Offers clarity, vision, strength, and wisdom. It represents the life force and maternal lineage of women. -Cedar: Heightens positive energy, uplifts feelings, and purifies. It’s also high in Vitamin C and can be used as a healing tea. -Sweetgrass: Symbolizes kindness and is braided, dried, and burned as a cleansing ritual. As the smoke rises, prayers are believed to ascend to the spirit world.
